    Thanks - very useful video. I have a 25 footer with no lazy jacks and this is exactly what I do apart from I have the topping lift to led to the cockpit so I can raise the boom from there. The main halyard is at the mast. My sail is new so quite stiff and the slugs have yet to wear in despite lube. So, I need to pull the main down, flaking the luff as I go allowing the leach to take care of itself. A downhaul is not necessary as it's another line and hauling that while flaking would require a bit of a juggle. In a blow, I simply get the main down and get a sail tie on soonest about mid way along the boom. I can tidy up at my leisure and more safely at anchor or on my mooring. Lazy jacks are an unnecessary complication in my experience on my length of vessel and only add great convenience when the main drops easily under it's own weight. As for those who are commenting around safety, traffic checks, jackstays etc. at what point must those people accept that a person in charge of a sailboat, especially the solo sailor must at some point engage brain and apply some common sense around their risk assessment? In my humble view, and as reflected through the ages, first and foremost, a sailor is responsible for their vessel and own safety, and a skipper for the safety of the crew. You don't get that from a dumbed down video but from experience.

      Thank you for your very pertinent comments. I agree completely. Very refreshing to hear that there are still a few sailors out there using their common sense. I wish you all the best. Fair winds.

    Cool trick I picked up somewhere along the way: You can tie the sheet bend with the same two finger method used for the bowline since the sheet bend is essentially the exact same knot configuration as the bowline. In fact, if you were to tie a standard bowline knot and then cut the loop, you’ll be left with a perfect single sheet bend. Pretty cool

    In a previous video, you mentioned a con of the rolling sail system was that they had creases? Now you mention that they are "crease free"? Unless I'm misunderstanding something? Thanks in advance!

    • @CarpeDiemSailingMagazine
      @CarpeDiemSailingMagazine 11 дней назад

      A rolled or furled sail will not have creases in it from being furled but when it rolled up when roller reefing there will be creases affecting performance. When folding a sail traditionally by flaking the sail there will be creases but they do not affect performance as the creases run fore and aft.

I only used to sporadically sail small sea dinghy's with a friend (laser, 420, fireball, skiff) when I was a teen so there was no reefing, only full send... 🙈 Now a lot of years later, I'm more interested in actually going sailing! Curious; I do roofs. We use rope grabs. Rock climbers do too. Basically they grab the lifeline so you don't fall more than the length of your tether which is clipped to the grab rather than the line itself. You could even do a prusik knot, clip in and slide it along your lifeline. With two, you can even climb and self-recover.. a video on using two prusik knots to ascend a rope. Not sure what wet conditions do though for the bite. ruclips.net/video/bscpdQ6fcPQ/видео.html

    • @CarpeDiemSailingMagazine
      @CarpeDiemSailingMagazine 28 дней назад

      I use a prusik loop sling as a back up for going up the mast and I did save someone from a nasty fall by using one. Not sure how well they would work trying to get back on a boat in rough weather. Best not to go over the side in the first place.

  • @37Takes
    @37Takes Месяц назад

    I wonder if tether with a loop or two either knotted into the lines or sewn in as a feature to make climbing easier would be a good idea. I could never, probably even on the dock, pull myself up with only a thin line to grab onto.

    Actually most people EXCEPT North Americans and maybe Canadians would recognise the Alpha flag as the diver down flag. The red and diagonal white stripe dive flag is an American invention originally used mainly for inland use because lake boaters rarely used signalling flags. Originally the design existed of two horisontal red stripes with a white strip between them. Discovering that they had redesigned the Austrian flag they changed it to its current design. It is not used a lot outside the US and Canada.

Probably the most used piece of 'music' in the history of RUclips. All these cheap Chinese tech advertisers have beaten this specific one to death. I may have heard it a million times by now (yeah I know...) Come on man ;;) You can easily fix the clipping vocals in post as well. Remember, the RUclips algorithm is keen on audio quality so it is pretty important not to have a bad mix or something that sounds like one of the millions of Dropshipping product ads in the first few seconds)., I'm sorry my music producer's mind had to chime in... rock on!

      It really doesn’t matter if the wind is blowing with this technique as long as you keep the wind on the bow (within reason of course) and as for the halyard, once alongside I remove it from the head of the sail and move it to the end of the boom next to the topping lift.
